“My family were Minnesota farmers (actually Pennsylvania Dutch), who picked up their families and personal belongings, their horses and cattle, gave up their long-held friendships… to settle here in the Freewater-Vincent (Umapine) area in 1902. Ninety years hence it is impossible to comprehend what motivated their migration to our ‘Valley’ other than to say they, like all the previous Pioneers, were adventurers - they came to see the Elephant.”

• Daniel Records-Galbraith

  1984–2026

  Civil-rights advocate and Title IX & ADA coordinator at WSU and Western Washington University; Pullman city councilmember. Faced nearly 25 years with Crohn’s with hope and resilience.

  Daniel Records-Galbraith, 42, passed away on April 28, 2026 after nearly 25 years living with Crohn's disease and other related conditions. He faced these with remarkable resilience and a hopeful, positive outlook throughout, always believing in a favorable outcome, always looking forward.

  Daniel was born on February 10, 1984 in Walla Walla, Washington, and lived in Heppner, Oregon before his family moved to Montesano, Washington when he was five years old, where he attended Montesano public schools. He went on to earn his degree in political science from Washington State University where he was heavily involved in the Gender Identity/Expression and Sexual Orientation Resource Center where he worked and volunteered. He went on to obtain his Juris Doctor from the University of Idaho. While at UI he was the president of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, the president of the law school LGBTQ+ student organization, and a founding member and editor of The Crit, a critical legal studies journal. This began a journey that set the foundation for a remarkable career devoted to equity, justice, and the dignity of every person he served.

  A dedicated civil rights administrator, Daniel spent nearly a decade at Washington State University as Assistant Director for Civil Rights Compliance and ADA Coordinator, where he worked tirelessly to ensure that students, staff, and faculty could seek civil rights support in an environment of competence, compassion, and respect. He approached policy not as paperwork, but as a living commitment, constantly reevaluating processes through an equity lens to make sure no one fell through the cracks. Most recently, he served as Director of Civil Rights and Title IX & ADA Coordinator at Western Washington University, where he brought that same passion and dedication to the Western community.

  Daniel's advocacy never stopped at the university gates. He served as a Pullman City Councilmember from 2018 to 2021 and as an officer and president at Inland Oasis, an LGBTQ+ nonprofit, from 2017 to 2021, giving his time and voice wherever people needed someone in their corner.

  Those who knew Daniel knew someone who could light up a room. His quick wit and warm, friendly nature drew people to him, and his genuine care for others was evident whether he was fighting for someone's rights at work or cracking up his nieces and nephews as their beloved "funcle." He had a yearning for yard sales, a love of fishing, and an infectious enthusiasm for whatever he turned his attention toward.

  Daniel loved food, not just eating it, but chasing it down. He was always hunting for the best French dip (The Colophon Café won top spot in his rankings), trying a new fusion restaurant, going wine tasting to pick out different flavor profiles, stopping in at a dive bar, or sitting down for a 10-course tasting menu. That same curiosity carried over to the road. He and Andy explored much of Washington State together, stopping at small towns, campgrounds, and parks, always wanting to see what was around the next bend.

  Daniel was also lucky enough to officiate three weddings, which he talked about often. He was an avid Star Trek and Stargate watcher, which deepened his interest in astronomy and space. He loved learning about the science behind black holes, nebulas, and other stellar phenomena.

  Daniel is survived by his husband of 18 years, Andy Galbraith, and their beloved dog Buddy; his parents, Roger and Joan Records; his brother James (Amanda) and their daughters Evelyn and Olivia; his brother Jeff (Meagan); his parents-in-law Steve and Kristi Galbraith; his brother-in-law Bryan Galbraith (Danielle) and their daughters Daisy, Iris, and Zinnia; his sister-in-law Melissa Healey (Daniel) and their daughter Rosalyn; the extended Records-Galbraith families; and his sisters of the heart, Natalie Ellis and Melissa Sturgill.

  He was the kind of person who made institutions more human and made people feel less alone. The world is smaller without him.

• Roger Michael Records

  1941–2019

  Award-winning science teacher and Boeing AI researcher; devoted Bible teacher. Max’s nephew, son of Roger Gilkey Records.

  Roger Michael Records, 77, of Kent Washington, had an appointment with his creator the morning of June 3, 2019, and he arrived right on time.

  Roger was born Sept 7,1941 in Kennewick Washington to Roger and Ethel Records. He graduated from Kennewick High School in 1959. He attended Whitworth College in Spokane Wa, where he met his future wife, Carol. They both worked in the college dining hall, where Roger noticed the girl with the cute smile. He said he was never quite the same!

  Roger finally summoned the courage to propose and they were married August 11, 1963 following his graduation from Whitworth with a BA in math. Later he received his MS in chemistry from Seattle University.

  He taught high school for 20 years mostly in Federal Way. He won the Science Teacher of the Year award for the state of Washington, and Outstanding Chemistry Teacher from the American Chemical Society. He loved being a teacher.

  To do his best for his family, Roger felt the necessity to make a career change and landed at the Boeing Company where he worked in computing and specialized in artificial intelligence. He was selected as an Associate Technical Fellow in recognition for his research in computing.

  Roger's greatest interest was teaching the Bible. He received Christ as Savior and Lord following High School graduation and had a life long desire to be God's man and to serve him faithfully. He did just that, teaching Sunday School, participating in leadership at church and serving as a Teaching Leader in Bible Study Fellowship for 11 years.

  After retirement, and much to his family's delight, he picked up a few hobbies. He was fascinated with marbles and erector sets and was an avid collector of both. He never met a banana cream pie that he didn't like.

  He adored his wife to his very last day and was loved and admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was humble, gentle and kind. He will be missed.

  Roger is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol Records, his children Andrew and Laurie and son-in-law Bill McIntosh, his brother and sister-in-law George and Sandy, nephew Jeff & wife Belinda, brother-in law Darrel Eyestone, and more friends than can be counted.
