Timeline

Key moments in the family’s journey west, drawn from the Ken Records history and family records.

  1. 1627–1647

    Arrival in America

The Records family immigrates to America (Virginia), likely Huguenots or Calvinists fleeing religious persecution in Europe. The name is an Americanized form of the original German name.

  2. 1751

    Phillip Records born

Phillip Records — the fifth generation in America but the first genealogically authenticated — is born. He slowly migrates west across Pennsylvania to Crawford County.

  3. 1836

    John Chambers Records heads west

At age 3, John Chambers (“Chame”) Records begins his journey west from Crawford County, PA. The family builds a river boat and floats the Ohio River by day, tying up at night, settling southeast of Columbus, Indiana.

  4. 1861

    On to Minnesota

With grown sons and their families, the Records move again to Vermillion County, Minnesota. Chame is mustered into the Civil War in August 1862.

  5. 1901

    Twenty-four came west

Old Chame Records and his four married sons ride the rail west out of Kirkhoven, Minnesota — twenty-four Records bound for the Walla Walla Valley, six-week-old Gladys the youngest on the ride.

  6. 1902

    Settling Freewater–Umapine

The family gives up fertile Vermillion County to settle in the Freewater–Vincent (Umapine) area of Oregon — adventurers who, like the pioneers before them, “came to see the Elephant.”

  7. ~1980

    Gladys Records Rominger’s genealogy

Before her death in 1980, Aunt Gladys Records Rominger publishes a lengthy Genealogy of the Records Family, the backbone of what we know.

  8. ~1992

    Ken Records writes it down

Ken Records, of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, writes down the family’s early settlement history — the document preserved on this page.

The Records Family — Ken Records’ history

“Their Early Settlement in the Freewater–Umapine Locality in 1902.” Furnished by Ken Records, Milton-Freewater, Oregon, written about 1992.

“My family were Minnesota farmers (actually Pennsylvania Dutch), who picked up their families and personal belongings, their horses and cattle, gave up their long-held friendships… to settle here in the Freewater-Vincent (Umapine) area in 1902. Ninety years hence it is impossible to comprehend what motivated their migration to our ‘Valley’ other than to say they, like all the previous Pioneers, were adventurers — they came to see the Elephant.”

— Ken Records, ca. 1992

The full seven-page history traces the family from their arrival in America (Virginia, 1627–1647) through Phillip Records (b. 1751), John Chambers Records floating the Ohio River in 1836, and the family’s arrival in the Walla Walla Valley. Read it all in the PDF above.

In memoriam — Roger Michael Records

1941–2019 · son of Roger Gilkey Records and Ethel, nephew of Max — the little boy in the farmyard photo above.

Roger Michael Records, 77, of Kent Washington, had an appointment with his creator the morning of June 3, 2019, and he arrived right on time.

Roger was born Sept 7,1941 in Kennewick Washington to Roger and Ethel Records. He graduated from Kennewick High School in 1959. He attended Whitworth College in Spokane Wa, where he met his future wife, Carol. They both worked in the college dining hall, where Roger noticed the girl with the cute smile. He said he was never quite the same!

Roger finally summoned the courage to propose and they were married August 11, 1963 following his graduation from Whitworth with a BA in math. Later he received his MS in chemistry from Seattle University.

He taught high school for 20 years mostly in Federal Way. He won the Science Teacher of the Year award for the state of Washington, and Outstanding Chemistry Teacher from the American Chemical Society. He loved being a teacher.

To do his best for his family, Roger felt the necessity to make a career change and landed at the Boeing Company where he worked in computing and specialized in artificial intelligence. He was selected as an Associate Technical Fellow in recognition for his research in computing.

Roger's greatest interest was teaching the Bible. He received Christ as Savior and Lord following High School graduation and had a life long desire to be God's man and to serve him faithfully. He did just that, teaching Sunday School, participating in leadership at church and serving as a Teaching Leader in Bible Study Fellowship for 11 years.

After retirement, and much to his family's delight, he picked up a few hobbies. He was fascinated with marbles and erector sets and was an avid collector of both. He never met a banana cream pie that he didn't like.

He adored his wife to his very last day and was loved and admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was humble, gentle and kind. He will be missed.

Roger is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol Records, his children Andrew and Laurie and son-in-law Bill McIntosh, his brother and sister-in-law George and Sandy, nephew Jeff & wife Belinda, brother-in law Darrel Eyestone, and more friends than can be counted.
